Casual and Dressy Casual for Older Folks: Looking Good

For casual wear, a layered look is best. Complementary colored t-shirts under a sweater or open cotton shirt. Pleated-front pants or shorts because our bellies pooch, waists that are not too tight for the same reason. We need a larger waist size because our clothes hang better on older bodies, not because we’re getting fat. Also, men’s necks get thinner so men might try a smaller neck size on button front shirts. Older women look wonderful in all types of hats. European walking shoes are practical and definitely “adult” and stay away from white tennis shoes unless you are on your way to the courts.

For a bit more dressy occasions, silk pleated slacks (without a hip pocket) for women, or a simple sheath dress that falls from the shoulders. Anything waist-hugging will just make that poochy belly look worse. Don’t be afraid to wear a nice scarf or bit of jewelry at the neck. Slender older women can show bare arms, but heavier older women look better in 3/4 sleeves. Give the stiletto heels to your granddaughter. For men, nothing beats the look of wool slacks. There are some wonderful lightweight wools that don’t itch. Solid-color button-front shirts look elegant, tucked in. Keep your loafers polished and wear dark socks.
